Hemkant Navdikar

Sangeet Samvaad Radio

Hemkant, a Tabla wizard, got music hereditary from his mother. His grandfather Shri. Dattatreya Anant Kulkarni alias Nanba Navdikar was an court artist and artisan in Aundh Province. Hemkant inherited love for literature and drawing from paternal side.

Born and brought up in Pune, Hemkant is an alumnus of Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya, popularly known as NuMaVi, one of the oldest schools in the city. He is a graduate in Science from S P College and also holds a diploma in journalism. After graduation, he worked as a full-time tabla player for almost 10 years from 1982 to 1992.

Hemkant learnt Tabla initially from Pt. G. L. Samant. Afterwards from Pt. Sadashiv Pawar and Pt. Arvind Mulgaonkar, both disciples of doyen of Farukhabad Gharana Ustad Amir Hussain Khan. He has accompanied several eminent artists during his career as a Tabla player. The zenith of the pinnacle came when Hemkant got an opportunity to accompany the legendary Indian classical vocalist Bharat Ratna Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. Close acquaintances with music personalities, such as Shri. Wamanrao Deshpande, virtuoso music composer Shri. Shrinivas Khale, and Veteran Pakhawaj exponent Pt. Arjun Shejwal, allowed Hemkant to further polish his musical skills.

Hemkant learnt Bengali language inspired by Shri. P L Deshpande, famous writer and towering personality in Marathi cultural field fondly known by his initials Pu La. He eventually came in contact with him and received blessings from him.

Hemkant has been a columnist for several dailies and magazines, and his writings have been appreciated and admired by music lovers. Apart from this creative field, Hemkant has also been running Navdikar Musicals, an establishment dedicated to quality manufacturing, maintenance, and repairs of musical instruments, for more than 30 years.
